In May 2025, Just Fair published a companion to our 2024 report. Our new toolkit: “The right to health in the UK – a toolkit for civil society organisations and activists” aims to serve as a guide for civil society organisations and activists interested in using the right to health framework to campaign for health justice in the UK.
It includes:
- Explainers on the right to health.
- Elements of a rights-based approach to health.
- An overview of why and how the right to health is being eroded across the UK.
- Resources to hold the UK Government accountable for its right to health obligations.
- Resources on how to hold local authorities accountable, with a focus on England.
- Key messages and tools to campaign for the right to health.
- Examples of past campaigns on the right to health.
This follows our December 2024 report: “The right to health in the UK”.
This report examined whether people are enjoying their human right to health across the UK. Concerningly, it finds that much remains to be done, with many experiencing difficulties in accessing healthcare and the broader determinants of health – such as safe housing conditions, adequate and nutritious food, access to green spaces and decent working conditions.
This is happening despite the fact that the UK signed and ratified the International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) in 1976, which enshrines the right to health at Article 12.
While human rights norms and standards cannot solve health inequalities and injustice overnight, they can provide an important framework to address them in a fair, transparent and participatory way.
