Just Fair welcomes the UK Government’s decision to lift the two-child limit. This long-overdue step could make a real difference in tackling child poverty and restoring fairness to the social security system.

The two-child limit breached the UK’s obligations under international law, including every child’s right to social security, to food, and to an adequate standard of living.

It should never have been introduced, and we have long campaigned for it to be revoked on human rights grounds, including as a part of several coalitions such as the End Child Poverty Coalition.

The cruel and unnecessary policy pushed 109 children into poverty every single day. It punished parents for having more than two children, and put their rights to food, housing, and a decent standard of living at risk. No child’s wellbeing or future should be capped by government policy or the size of their family.

Lifting the two-child limit is projected to lift 350,000 children out of poverty and mean 700,000 children are in less deep poverty. It is a victory for all those who have fought to end this injustice, but it must also mark the start of something bigger.

The UK must now go further and protect economic, social and cultural rights in law, so that no government can ever again introduce policies that drive people into hardship.
