In order to strengthen their existing equality commitments, Southwark Council voted on 14 July 2021 to include socio-economic disadvantage as a factor in their decision-making by committing to implement the socio-economic duty as outlined by Section 1 of the Equality Act 2010.
The updated constitution, which includes the socio-economic duty was published on 21 July 2021.
In order to further embed the duty across the local authority, explicit commitment to this duty can now also be found in the Council’s new Equality Framework.
We congratulate Southwark Council for taking these important steps to help to build a fairer society. Putting the socio-economic disadvantage at the heart of decision-making will help tackle inequality in our society.
