Get involved

Help us to build a fairer and more just society in the UK by getting involved in our work.

Economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) are the rights of everyday life. Respecting, protecting and fulfilling them is essential if we are to create a fairer and more just society across the UK.

Just Fair exists to champion these rights. You can too.

You can take action to champion these rights by:

#1. Using economic, cultural and social rights in your campaigns to hold the UK Government and public authorities to account.

#2. Joining the campaign to incorporate economic, social and cultural rights into domestic law.

#1. Holding Uk Government and Public Authorities to account

For civil society activists and organisations campaigning against poverty, inequality and injustice.

If you work in social justice, we offer support so that your campaigns to hold public authorities to account are even more effective.

We want more people to know that the rights of everyday life belong to all of us. The UK Government has the obligation to respect, protect and fulfil economic, social and cultural rights because it ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) in 1976.

We can help you use these rights in your campaigns through our resources, training and networks.

The UK ESCR Network is a collective of organisations and individuals committed to the promotion and protection of economic, social and cultural rights, without discrimination in the UK.

The Network meets regularly to share information and good practice, collaborate on campaigns and reports, learn from each other’s approaches, and act in solidarity on ESCR issues.

Our regular training sessions support activists to use rights in their campaigns and lobbying.

We are currently inviting London-based organisations and groups to apply for the London Human Rights Community Programme. It will focus on how human rights can help make change in your community.

If there is an area of economic, cultural and social rights that you would like to see us cover, let us know.

How to hold the UK Government to account

1. Learn about human rights framing

Human rights are a powerful campaigning tool, but most of us don’t use them much – and we’re missing out!

Rights don’t replace ethical or policy arguments but can strengthen them.

2. Use rights resources in your campaigns

The UN published a checklist to test if a policy complies with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Download the checklist and our campaign advice.

3. Share evidence and experience

Hold those in power to account by getting involved in processes that monitoring the UK’s human rights record. See examples of this in our recent submission to the UN.

4. Develop your expertise

We offer free training to help build knowledge and skills around ESCR.

5. Join the movement

Keep up-to-date with our campaigns by following us on X (Twitter) and Facebook, and signing up for our newsletter.

#2. Incorporating economic, social and cultural rights into UK law

For policy-makers, politicians and organisations campaigning on poverty, inequality and injustice.

Despite our international commitments, our everyday rights are not protected in domestic law and there is no process to hold decision-makers to account.

We are campaigning to change this, and are convening a network to persuade and encourage our elected representatives to change the law.

You can join this campaign and help make sure our everyday rights are protected in domestic law.

 What can I do?

I’m a policy-maker or politician.

You can find out what incorporating economic, social and cultural rights into UK law could mean for policy and legislation.

Ask us challenging questions and let’s discuss what these rights might mean for policy development and legislation.
