In England, over 1.3 million school-aged children rely on Free School Meals throughout the year. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has launched a food voucher scheme to ensure that children who were missing school do not go hungry.

In this episode of RightsCast, we hear from Candice James, who manages a community centre in Brixton and works directly with families who rely on free school meals or who have been newly plunged into poverty as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Imogen Richmond-Bishop of Just Fair and Sustain, who at the time of recording was preparing to take a legal case to prevent #HolidayHunger in England.

After intense campaigning by civil society, MPs, young people, and a premier league footballer, as well as the threat of legal action by our friends at Sustain and the Good Law Project represented by Jamie Burton the chair of our board of trustees, the Government has u-turned and announced a £120 million “Covid Summer School Fund” to support children in England over this coming holiday.
